Every year, chronic insomnia affects millions of people and costs the economy billions in lost productivity, just in the US alone.  Stellar Sleep, a new and innovative mobile app aiming to address the root cause of chronic insomnia, has secured its inaugural round of institutional funding, marking a pivotal moment for the company. In the United States, where inadequate sleep habits not only incur substantial economic costs but also contribute to health issues such as heart disease and depression, Stellar Sleep stands out as a promising solution for those suffering with chronic insomnia.

Co-founded by George Wang and Edrei Chua, both personally acquainted with chronic insomnia, the app distinguishes itself by focusing on a population often underserved by existing sleep-tracking tools — those grappling with chronic insomnia, a condition defined by persistent sleep problems three or more nights a week for over three months. Frustrated by the lengthy waitlists for sleep clinicians, Wang and Chua took matters into their own hands, delving into sleep therapy, a psychology-based approach that seeks to uncover the underlying causes of insomnia.

Chua emphasizes the psychological aspect as the primary line of treatment, challenging the conventional approach of prescribing medication or subjecting patients to extended wait times. Stellar Sleep’s mobile app aligns with this philosophy, offering users an innovative solution to break the cycle of chronic insomnia. Backed by a clinical assessment involving 500 users, the app demonstrated a remarkable 50% greater effectiveness than traditional sleeping pills.

The sleep app’s methodology involves an onboarding assessment, incorporating various techniques such as cognitive behavior therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, and motivational interviewing. Priced at $60 per month, users can seamlessly integrate wearables, allowing Stellar Sleep to craft a personalized and interactive program. The app evolves intelligently, while leveraging users’ sleep statistics for ongoing customization.

This new round of funding, led by Initialized Capital and featuring participation from esteemed investors like Y Combinator, Lombardstreet Ventures, Switch Ventures, Moonfire Ventures, Scrum Ventures, 8vdx, and Goodwater, signifies a pivotal moment for Stellar Sleep. The startup co-founders plan to leverage this capital infusion to enhance the app’s content and curriculum, aiming to enrich the user experience. Additionally, they intend to forge more partnerships with clinicians to gain insights into practices and patients, facilitating further personalization of the app’s offerings.

George Wang emphasizes their dedication to improving the product to cater to anyone suffering from chronic insomnia, regardless of the cause or current life circumstances. Scaling the program to reach a broader audience and bolstering distribution efforts are also key priorities for Stellar Sleep, as it seeks to make a lasting impact on the landscape of sleep solutions.
