In a significant stride towards revolutionizing medical imaging, the very innovative Dutch deep tech startup QDI Systems has successfully raised €5 million in Series A funding. This very innovative HealthTech startup aims to leverage quantum dot technology to enhance X-ray imaging and mammography screening, potentially transforming the landscape of medical applications.

Quantum Dots: A New Frontier in Imaging Technology

QDI Systems, founded in 2019 as a spinoff from the Zernike Institute for Advanced Materials at the University of Groningen, asserts itself as a pioneer in applying quantum dots to medical imaging. Quantum dots, microscopic semiconductor nanoparticles, hold the key to converting photons into electronic signals, opening up novel possibilities in the field.

Safer, Faster, and More Precise Imaging

Collaborating with the Swiss Centre for Electronics and Microtechnology (CSEM), QDI Systems has developed the first quantum dots-based CMOS imaging chip tailored for X-rays. According to Artem Shulga, the founder and CEO of QDI Systems, the quantum dots technology enables X-ray imaging that is safer, faster, and more precise.

Quantum dots exhibit a sensitivity ten times higher than the current industrial standard, amorphous selenium, utilized in mammography imagers. This heightened sensitivity allows for a significant reduction in radiation dose without compromising image quality, addressing a critical concern in mammography.

Expanding Horizons with Shortwave Infrared (SWIR) Technology

Beyond X-ray imaging, QDI Systems is exploring the potential of shortwave infrared (SWIR) technology. This expansion aims to tap into new markets, including industrial applications such as image sensors for sorting processes and consumer applications like facial recognition for mobile phones.

Market Applications and Future Focus

The startup identifies high-resolution imaging demands in various applications, with a particular focus on mammography diagnostics and screening, as well as dental applications. While acknowledging the complexities of the medical sector, QDI Systems is concurrently exploring industrial inspection applications to expedite the product’s market presence.

Strategic Funding and Growth Plans

The Series A funding, led by the Investment and Development Agency for the Northern Netherlands (NOM) and supported by previous investors Carduso Capital, RuG Ventures, and, provides QDI Systems with the necessary resources to scale up quantum dot technology. The total investment also includes an innovation loan of €1.97 million from the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO). With this funding, QDI Systems aims to advance quantum dots technology for medical applications and expand into new markets, accompanied by a doubling of its team size.

As QDI Systems pioneers quantum dot technology in medical imaging, the investment marks a crucial step towards reshaping the future of diagnostic precision and safety in the healthcare industry.
