In the space of digital health initiatives catering specifically to women of color, Health in Her HUE has unveiled the successful closure of a $3 million seed round, spearheaded by Seae Ventures. Founded in 2018 by Ashlee Wisdom and Eddwina Bright (who has since departed), the app endeavors to bridge health disparities by facilitating connections between women of color and healthcare providers capable of addressing their unique needs.

Operating against the backdrop of a precarious time for women’s health, particularly for women of color, who continue to grapple with medical discrimination, Health in Her HUE challenges prevailing myths within modern medicine. Falsehoods such as the notion that Black individuals experience less pain than their white counterparts or that Black skin is thicker persist, contributing to a pervasive distrust in medical systems. Addressing this disparity, Wisdom emphasized, “Health In Her HUE is uniquely positioned to address the existing racial health disparities and connect our members with providers who are committed to hearing and understanding their unique lived experiences while providing quality care accordingly,” in an interview with TechCrunch.

With nearly 13,000 members and 1,300 health providers spanning 60 specialties, this innovative startup provides a comprehensive platform that includes educational health content and community forums for women to engage with one another. Remaining at the helm as CEO, Wisdom revealed that the recent Seed funding will fuel the expansion of products and programs. This includes augmenting the existing Care program, which offers culturally tailored health education classes, introducing new topics such as fertility, endometriosis, and postpartum recovery, and launching a video-based health question answering service by clinical experts.

Despite facing undeniable challenges in securing this seed round, Wisdom navigated the dual focus of fundraising and revenue generation. The company initiated fundraising in late 2022, contending with market retractions that Wisdom likened to a “series of unfortunate events” throughout the preceding year.

Seae Ventures, a pivotal supporter since Health in Her HUE’s pre-seed round in 2021, led the recent funding effort. Notable participants in this round include Johnson & Johnson Impact Ventures, HBCU Founders Fund, Stanford Impact Fund, and Morgan Stanley Inclusive Ventures Labs. Health in Her HUE’s total funding now stands at $4.2 million, firmly establishing its presence in the burgeoning digital healthcare market.

As Health in Her HUE becomes an integral player in the digital healthcare world, Wisdom remains steadfast in her commitment to expanding the platform’s influence and attracting new users. She is equally dedicated to enhancing the membership experience, ensuring that more women of color can avail themselves of the valuable offerings the platform provides.
