This startup was founded by CEO Rich Hacking and COO Sean Emery, Buffet aims to simplify the process of meeting new people by seamlessly matching users with both a person and a place to meet, akin to a combination of Tinder and OpenTable.

The app comes at a critical time when loneliness and isolation have become pervasive issues, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. According to a 2023 report from the U.S. surgeon general, approximately half of U.S. adults reported experiencing loneliness, with significant associated health risks. Buffet seeks to address this challenge by facilitating real-world interactions that can alleviate feelings of isolation and foster meaningful connections.

At its core, Buffet is about connecting individuals based on shared interests and preferences. Users begin by entering five of their interests, such as hobbies or activities they enjoy. The app then uses a series of questions to gain insight into users’ personalities and preferences for meeting places and people.

Buffet’s algorithm then matches users accordingly, enabling them to send invitations and initiate conversations with their matches directly through the app. Unlike traditional social platforms that prioritize digital communication, Buffet encourages users to meet face-to-face, allowing them to engage in meaningful conversations and forge genuine connections in person.

The app’s target demographic includes young adults aged 18 to 25, as well as young professionals in their late twenties to early thirties, who may be particularly vulnerable to feelings of loneliness. By focusing on this demographic, Buffet aims to address the needs of those most affected by the loneliness epidemic.

In terms of its business model, Buffet plans to offer its app for free, prioritizing user acquisition and trust-building. The company intends to generate revenue through advertising, leveraging an in-app community forum where local businesses can promote their services and offerings directly to users.

While Buffet is currently available exclusively on iOS, the company plans to launch an Android app in the future, further expanding its reach and accessibility.
